Abstract

Operation Barbarossa and the halting of German offensive marked a turning point in World War II. The causes are diverse. The historiography blames Hitler as supreme commander but does not analyze in depth the role of his advisors. This article shows the responsibility of the German General Staff and the importance of the analysis of the operational factors to select the decisive moments and, above all, the influence of geography in the planning and development of the capabilities to sustain a strategic offensive.
